Your PCS Moving Checklist

A phase-by-phase guide from the day you get orders to settling into your new duty station. Click each phase to expand.

6 MONTHS As Soon As You Get Orders
  • Review orders thoroughly for report date, dependent travel authorization, and entitlements
  • Contact the Transportation Office (TMO/PPPO) to schedule a move counseling briefing
  • Decide: Government (HHG) move, PPM (DITY) move, or combination
  • Request a sponsor at your gaining installation through your unit
  • Start a PCS binder or digital folder for all documents, receipts, and records
  • Research housing at new location (on-post waitlists, off-post rentals, BAH rates)
  • Begin decluttering and inventory to reduce weight (save money on PPM, avoid overweight HHG)
3 MONTHS Planning & Booking
  • Book your HHG move through DPS (Defense Personal Property System) or schedule with TMO
  • If doing PPM: get quotes, rent trucks/trailers, and request advance operating allowance
  • Apply for on-post housing at gaining installation (waitlists can be 60+ days)
  • Request school records and medical/dental records for the family
  • Schedule veterinary appointments if moving pets (health certificates, vaccinations)
  • Research childcare and school enrollment at gaining location
  • Notify your landlord if renting (check SCRA protections for lease termination)
1 MONTH Confirm & Prepare
  • Confirm pack and pick-up dates with your moving company or TMO
  • Create a detailed home inventory with photos/video of high-value items
  • Separate items you will hand-carry (important documents, medications, valuables)
  • Schedule final housing inspection and utilities disconnect dates
  • Update DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) with new address
  • Set up mail forwarding through USPS

  • Clean out refrigerator and defrost freezer 24 hours before pack day
  • Confirm vehicle registration and insurance are valid for your route and destination state

MOVE DAY Pack Out & Departure
  • Be present during entire pack-out to monitor movers and note inventory numbers
  • Verify every item on the inventory sheet before signing. Note pre-existing damage.
  • Take photos of items as they are loaded (especially electronics, furniture, fragile items)
  • Do NOT sign the inventory as "packed by owner" unless you actually packed those boxes
  • Keep copies of the DD Form 1299 (Application for Shipment) and inventory sheets
  • Do a final walkthrough of the empty house. Check closets, attic, garage, yard shed.
ARRIVAL Settling In at New Station

PCS Entitlements & Allowances

You have earned these benefits. Understanding them can save your family thousands of dollars on every move.

🚚

Government Move (HHG)

The military hires a Transportation Service Provider (TSP) to pack, ship, and deliver your household goods at no cost to you, up to your authorized weight allowance.

Best for: Families with a full household who want a hands-off move experience.
🚗

PPM / DITY Move

You move yourself and get reimbursed at 100% of what the government would have paid a contractor. This can mean thousands in your pocket if you move efficiently.

Pro tip: You can do a partial PPM alongside an HHG move and get paid for what you transport yourself.
🏠

DLA (Dislocation Allowance)

A one-time, lump-sum payment to help cover the miscellaneous costs of relocating (deposits, connection fees, supplies). Amount is based on rank and dependency status.

2025 rates: E-1 to E-5 (with dependents) approx. $2,188. O-4+ approx. $3,757.
🏚

TLE / TLA (Temporary Lodging)

Covers hotel and meal costs when you are between homes. TLE is for CONUS moves (up to 14 days total, split between old and new location). TLA is for OCONUS (up to 60 days).

Keep ALL receipts. TLE reimburses actual lodging costs up to the locality rate.
🚘

MALT (Mileage Allowance)

Reimbursement for driving your POV (privately owned vehicle) to your new duty station. The 2026 PCS rate is $0.205/mile. You may be authorized MALT for up to two POVs if you have dependents.

A 1,500-mile PCS drive = approximately $308 per vehicle, plus per diem for each travel day.
💵

Per Diem & Advance Pay

You receive per diem for each authorized travel day (meals and incidental expenses). You can also request advance basic pay (up to 3 months) and advance BAH (up to 3 months) before a PCS.

Request advance pay through your finance office at least 30 days before departure.
🐶

Pet Transportation Allowance

The military now provides a pet shipment allowance to help offset the cost of transporting your pets during a PCS. This covers dogs, cats, and other authorized household pets.

2026 rates: Up to $550 for CONUS moves. Up to $2,000 for OCONUS moves. Keep all receipts.

HHG Weight Allowances by Rank

Your authorized weight limit determines how much household goods the military will ship. Overweight shipments come out of your pocket.

10 PCS Mistakes That Cost Families Money

We have moved thousands of military families. These are the mistakes we see over and over again.

1

Not photographing everything before the movers arrive

If you cannot prove an item's condition before the move, your damage claim will be denied. Photograph every room, every piece of furniture, every serial number.

2

Signing the inventory without reviewing it

Movers will describe items vaguely ("scratched," "worn") to pre-excuse future damage. Read every line. Dispute anything inaccurate BEFORE you sign.

3

Not being present during pack-out

When you leave the movers unsupervised, items get packed incorrectly, valuables go missing, and you lose your leverage for claims. Be there the entire time.

4

Missing the 75-day claims window

You have 180 days from delivery to file a claim for damaged or missing items. After that, your claim is denied. No exceptions. Mark it on your calendar the day your goods arrive.

5

Going overweight on an HHG shipment

If your shipment exceeds your authorized weight, YOU pay the difference out of pocket. It can cost thousands. Declutter before the movers arrive, not after you get the bill.

6

Not getting weigh tickets for a PPM move

You need a certified weight ticket for your vehicle empty AND full. Without both, you will not be reimbursed. Certified scales are at truck stops, CAT scales, and some moving companies.

7

Forgetting to separate PBP&E from household goods

Professional Books, Papers, and Equipment have their own weight allowance. If they get mixed in with your HHG, that weight counts against your personal limit. Keep them separate and labeled.

8

Not using TLE at both ends of the move

You can split your 14 TLE days between your old and new location. Many families only use it at the destination and leave money on the table at the origin.

9

Waiting too long to get on the housing waitlist

On-post housing waitlists can be months long. Apply the day you get orders. You can always decline later, but you cannot go back in time to get on the list.

10

Not requesting advance pay

PCS moves are expensive upfront. You can request up to 3 months advance basic pay and 3 months advance BAH. The repayment is spread over 12 months and is interest-free.

How to File a Damage or Loss Claim

If your items arrive damaged or missing, you have the right to be compensated. Follow these steps exactly.

1

Document at Delivery

Note ALL damage and missing items on the delivery inventory. Photograph everything. Do not let the driver leave until you have inspected and noted issues.

2

File Within 75 Days

Submit your claim through MilMove (formerly DPS) at milmove.mil. Include photos, receipts, and the annotated inventory sheets. File within 180 days for Full Replacement Value (FRV).

3

Get Repair Estimates

For damaged items, get two written repair estimates from local businesses. For destroyed items, document the replacement cost with current retail prices.

4

Review the Offer

The TSP will make a settlement offer. You can accept, negotiate, or transfer the claim to the military claims office for further review if the offer is unfair.

Important: The 75-day window is firm. If you discover hidden damage after signing, you can still file within 180 days of delivery. Open every box as soon as possible.

OCONUS, Pets, Vehicles & More

Not every PCS is a simple stateside move. Here is what you need to know for special situations.

🌎 OCONUS Moves

  • Expect a longer timeline. Book your HHG move as early as possible (90+ days recommended).
  • You may be authorized an Unaccompanied Baggage (UB) shipment (usually 350-600 lbs) that arrives faster than your HHG.
  • Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) overseas can cover up to 60 days of housing.
  • Some items cannot be shipped OCONUS (firearms, certain electronics, hazardous materials). Check your destination country's customs restrictions.
  • Passports and visas for dependents. Start the process immediately. Some countries require SOFA stamps.

🐶 Moving with Pets

  • The military does NOT ship pets. You are responsible for all pet transportation and costs.
  • Most airlines require a health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
  • Hawaii, Guam, and many overseas locations require quarantine periods (Hawaii: 120-day pre-arrival program or 5-day quarantine).
  • Japan and Germany have specific breed restrictions and vaccination requirements (rabies titer test).
  • Research pet-friendly TLF (Temporary Lodging Facilities) at your new installation. Not all allow pets.

🚗 Vehicle Shipment

  • For OCONUS moves, the military will ship ONE POV at government expense through the Vehicle Processing Center (VPC).
  • Deliver your vehicle 2-4 weeks before your departure date. It can take 4-8 weeks for overseas delivery.
  • Vehicle must be clean, have less than 1/4 tank of gas, no personal items inside, and pass a safety inspection.
  • Check if your destination has vehicle restrictions (Japan: JCI inspection required; Germany: TUV inspection).
  • For CONUS PCS, you drive your own vehicles and receive MALT mileage reimbursement.

👪 Unaccompanied Tours

  • If dependents are not command-sponsored, you may be authorized to store HHG in place (SIT) or at a government warehouse.
  • You receive a reduced weight allowance for your unaccompanied baggage.
  • Family Separation Allowance (FSA) of $250/month kicks in after 30 days of separation.
  • Coordinate with your gaining unit for barracks or BOQ availability at the unaccompanied location.
  • Power of Attorney for your spouse is critical for handling housing, vehicles, and financial matters in your absence.
